ALASKA
WHY WE GO
Alaska has one of the most culturally diverse populations of any state. Despite its beauty its not without great need. Poverty, suicide, mental illness, homelessness, drugs and alcoholism plague all parts of the state at rates that are far higher than in the lower 48. Because so many jobs depend on the oil industry or are seasonal, unemployment rates are far higher here. This is an opportunity to partner alongside local charitable organizations, and serve your fellow Americans in a place that few people go.
WHAT WE DO
Food scarcity is a major issue in Alaska. 95% of all staples are imported from the lower 48 and the costs are astronomical. We work with multiple food banks and distribution centers that serve those in need. We also work with charities that provide hot meals 365 days a year to the homeless or disadvantaged.
With near continuous sunlight during the summer it's really the only time meaningful construction and repairs can be made. But this is also a difficult time for families and charities alike. Parents are often working more to make ends meet while work is available. Charities often sideline projects for years because help is unavailable. Here's where we step in. Skilled or unskilled, your abilities will be utilized on any level. We will work with your group in advance so that members of your group are able to contribute to the project in a meaningful way.
WHAT WE DO FOR FOOD AND FUN
With the exception of departure and arrival hours, three meals will be provided each day. Typical American style food rules the day, however there will be ample opportunity to sample fresh salmon, caribou and reindeer as these are cost effective alternative to the high cost of beef, which is seldom used. Typically a full day or two afternoons or evenings are reserved for fun and exploration. Because of the near continuous summer sunlight, the options are endless and can continue late into the evening!
